Dublin with Mom
Hi-
I am a 22 year old college student that has travelled through Europe staying at hostels with fellow college students. However, I am leaving for Dublin soon on a trip with my Mom (graduation present) and I have no idea where to stay. I just think it will get boring with just the two of us- I am used to meeting a lot of people when I travel. Also- I know she wants to go out to pubs, but I am really into going out to clubs and dancing, and I know she would not want to do this- I need advice on how to meet people with a hostel like friendly atmosphere, but I don't want to take my mom to a hostel. (She would have fainted after just walking in the front door of the one I stayed at in Amsterdam-- and I ended up staying there for 7 nights)!!!

Thanks!

Heidi,
I think you're going to have to look at this trip differently than the European trips you've taken in the past. You might want to leave your club clothes at home for this trip and plan to just take a nice mother/daughter trip. Maybe your mom just missed you while you were at college and wants you two to re-acquaint.
As a college graduate, I'm sure you're a bright person who would also be able to enjoy all of the history that Dublin has to offer. Go with you mom on some walking tours of the city, visit the museums and landmarks. Try some great restaurants and visit some outdoor markets.
I think compromising by doing things you both can appreciate would make it a better trip than your just ditching your mom to find other people to hang out with at a hostel. You probably wouldn't be going if it wasn't for her giving you this present. Save you clubbing idea for when you go back with your friends or on your own.

Hi Heidi:
Congratulations! Enjoy your trip with Mom. I'm with Vanessa on this, This a trip for the TWO of you. I travel with my Mom all the time and I was initially surprised at how flexible she was and how much we enjoyed each other's company. You will probably be surprised too!
Are you looking for hotel or B & B's for your stay? Let us know. You'll get great advice here.
And trust me you will not be bored. Enjoy your Mom and your trip!

Heidi, I agree with AC and Vanessa. In fact, I think Vanessa's answer was right on the money.... some of the best advice I have read recently.
Vanessa your reply was very thoughtful and articulate IMHO, Judy :-)

yeah, that is probably true, i am sure we will end up going to many a pub, so i will not have o worry too much about nightlife. i just know that a lot of the attractions outside the city are closed because of hoof and mouth and i still want to have fun.

we are staying at a b&b, i think. i just hope its not all elderly couples-- we went on a cruise to alaska and there was NO ONE my age. it was really funny looking back on it now, but i was miserable.

The first time I ever went to Dublin I went with my Dad & brother, it was probably the best bonding experience of my life. There is something about Eire, all barriers disappear.
Take your Mum to a pub called The Quays, we had a grand old time.
