Dublin to Cashel after overnight flight?
We are arriving in Dublin on the 7:00am flight. We planned on driving to Cashel from the airport. Are we crazy or is it do-able?
My thought is we'll arrive in Cashel no later than 3pm (am I correct on this?) We'll get to our B&B, relax, eat and hit the bed early. The next day we'll see the rock and keep the day easy and stay one more night before really beginning the road trip. Otherwise we're stopping somewhere outside Dublin for day & night then driving to Cashel the next day. If this is the consensus, where do you recommend we stay? Dublin is out of the question as Bon Jovi is there that weekend and the rooms are all booked up. Thanks for any suggestions. |
Can you sleep on the plane? If you have some sleep in you, then I see no reason why you can't drive there. I don't think it will take you 7 hours to drive to Cashel. My Ireland geography memory is a bit sketchy, but the place isn't that big.
Bon Jovi is really that big in Ireland? Who knew?!? |
The journey from Dublin to Cashel is appox 107 miles and travelling time is estimated at 3 hours on a good road. To see the route and any other route you wish to plan for in Ireland go to www.aaroadwatch.ie/routes. One cannot know how one will feel after a flight. If you feel tired there are plenty of places to pull in and have a coffee.

My last trip, we got into Dublin around 2pm (was supposed to be 10am!) and drove to Kilkenny for the first night. As we had to get our rental car and eat dinner halfway there, it was quite dark by the time we got there (it was April).
I would have much rather stopped at somewhere such as Carlow (which is where we had a forgettable dinner) than have had to push on towards an unknown destination in the dark our first day there. My parents had been traveling from SFO, so they were REALLY tired :) |
I just got back from Ireland and on our last day (a Sunday) we drove from Cashel into Dublin. I know it's the opposite direction for you but if anything I would think getting out of Dublin is easier than getting in. It took us just over two hours with a gas stop and that's to the center of Dublin. You're going from the airport which is at least 30-40 minutes north of the city so hopefully you can somehow bypass going directly through Dublin.
The drive from Cashel to Dublin was the easiest bit of driving we did all trip as it's a fairly straight route amd the roads were nice and wide for once and fast. Again though, it was on a Sunday. At any rate, I definitely think you can make the drive your first day. And it's probably a good drive to break yourselves in on rather than doing narrower routes. |
