Dublin to Armagh?
 

I would appreciate any advice or ideas on the most efficient ways to travel from Dublin to Armagh. Thank you!

Where in Armagh?

Do you want to tour around - if so you will probably need to rent a car?

Yes, we definitely want to tour around in that area. I wasn't sure if there was public transit available from Dublin to that area, and then rent a car. Or rent a car in Dublin and drive into Northern Ireland.

It's about an hour's drive, traffic permitting, from Dublin airport (the least painful place in North Dublin to hire a car) to Armagh City - and a great deal less to the towns and villages of South Armagh.

Trains to Newry (itself partly in Co Armagh) from Dublin are frequent enough, but take as long - and you've then got to faff about finding a hire place. Public transport between Dublin and Armagh City is poor and messy.

We rented a car at Dublin airport and drove to Omagh, which is a good deal further than Armagh. The drive was really not difficult at all, even though we took a wrong road leaving the airport. We stopped at Newgrange, a stop that I highly recommend. There are often long waits to get in, and I don't know if you can reserve an entry time.

Depends on the whole rather than the part.. Its easy to get between the two by bus the Goldline X4 takes just short of 2 hours from Busaras in the city to Armagh bus station. One and a half hours from DUB airport. The other option is the X1 to Newry and the No40 from there.

Renting a car in Armagh could be a task in itself?

Remember its one island two countries so a car hired from one of the main players in one would need returning in the same (or pay a repatriation fee) renting from a small local outfit would mean returning to exactly the same place.

I'd worry about flanner's driving speed, but not his advice to rent a car at the airport. The driving time would be closer to 1.5 hours for most of us.

Armagh is not tourist central. What do you hope to see there?

Thanks for all the advice. We plan to spend a little time looking around in Armagh because our family is from there, and we'd like to have a little genealogical pilgrimage.

Have you done enough genealogical research to identify locations that you would like to visit?

Yes, Padraig. Our family is the Verner family, so we plan to at least drive through the Verner's Bridge area so we can have a better idea of our family's home area. I also understand that the Armagh historical museum has a painting of Sir William Verner.

An interesting pedigree! About half the people of Armagh will think it good, and the other half will think it bad. Be circumspect about telling strangers that you are descended from a Grand Master of the Orange Order.

He is buried in Loughgall.

Sorry, I can't help on accommodation - I live too close to ever have had a need to overnight there; it's day-trip territory for me.
