Dublin - Saggart 3 days

Purchased a 3 city trip from the US - Dublin, London, Paris. Flying into Dublin and first stay is 2 nights at the Citywest Hotel in Saggart.

1. Is there anything to do in this area or will we need to drive elsewhere to sightsee and visit some pubs?
2. Should we just rent a car at the airport? Sounds like we'll need it not only to get to the hotel but also to get around and then back to the airport to depart for London.

Any and all suggestions and info are much appreciated.

When is/was your trip?

We are at CityWest now and can answer your questions. It really is isolated, dated & shabby. I would not recommend it. If you can stay in Dublin proper, that would be better.

Saggart is too far out to stay for a trip to Dublin. It'll take an hour on the tram or about €50 in a taxi to get into town.

I suppose that your tour operator booked that hotel on the basis that it costs them very little. There are reasons for that - mainly location.

Hiring a car is not a great solution, because driving and parking in Dublin can be difficult for those not familiar with the city. As for taking a car to go to the pub...

Consider using the money you were considering spending on car hire to get a hotel room in a better location.

Here is my review of Citywest:

Pros:
Very nice staff; everyone we encountered was cheerful and helpful
Free parking
Fast, free WiFi
Good restaurants, especially the Lemongrass
Easy to take train into Dublin (but it’s a 40 minute ride)

At check-in, our reservation was wrong. Good thing we had a printout, to prove we had reserved and paid in advance for a suite.
This problem was most probably caused by the conference coordinator, not the hotel. The front desk apologized, and fixed it with no further problem.

We checked in on a Sunday evening after traveling from the States. There was no doorman, baggage handler, or anyone to show us to our room and how to operate the three heating/cooling thermostats.
The hotel building is a maze. We walked a long way, down a few hallways, to reach our room from the elevator.

This hotel has so much potential, yet it misses the mark on several points:
* Frumpy, tired, frayed decor
* Torn, taped, stained carpeting
* Peeling wallpaper
* Weird smells
* Nice TVs, but few channels of interest
* Constant maintenance and redecorating going on

Isolated location. It’s an easy 10 minute walk to the train, and 40 minute train ride to center of Dublin. Only about 5EU round trip. Direct route in to the city; one transfer returning at night.
Not convenient to do everyday, though.

In our room:
Our toilet bowl was not clean (gross), would not flush, and then water leaked all over the floor during our first night. Maintenance fixed it promptly, though. I left a tip and a note for housekeeping, after which the toilet bowl was cleaned properly. It must have been stopped up by previous guest.

The hotel and our room didn’t have a sparking clean feeling. Hairs were on the telephone keypad, dirt on ledge beneath shower door, stained signs on breakfast buffet. . ..

Funny aside:
Black & white identically-framed prints decorate the hallways.
We noticed that the same print was hanging three times in a row on the same wall, just a few feet apart. At another spot, the same print is on facing walls, across the hall from each other. These same prints were seen throughout the hotel. These are not even interesting or special historic prints, to be honest. Just some buildings, some random people. Pretty blah. You’d think they could have paid more attention when hanging them, and chosen more interesting ‘art’.

Attention to detail and quality control are lacking at this hotel.

Website promised views of 240 rolling acres from our suite. When checking in, I was told there are no view rooms. Mine looked out over the loading dock. From very early morning, I heard trucks coming and going, and loud banging as they unloaded their freight.

Suite has no bedroom doors. Two bedrooms, but no privacy or ability to shut out light and sound from the living room. Would be bad for two couples to share.
