Dublin City Tours

Will be in Dublin for a weekend this summer. Would I do better with the Hop ON, Hop Off Bus Tour, a guided walking tour, or just walking on my own to get the feel of the city?

If you click on my name, you will find my Ireland trip report. We found that the Hop On, Hop Off bus was a great way to see more of the city and get from place to place, as well. Some of the driver/guides were quite entertaining, too- definitely a worthwhile thing for a short trip!

For getting a quick overview of Dublin, NOTHING beats the 'Hop On / Hop Off' bus tours. You can't reasonably walk to Pheonix Park or Kilmainham, but they are on the route. The voice over tour guide will entertain and enlighten you.
You CAN do a Literary walking tour and/or a Pub Crawl or Ghost Tour in the evening, as well, if you feel the urge, but a bus tour during the day is still your best bet.

My vote is for the Hop-on Hop-off bus. I spent just 3 days in Dublin last May and the bus was great for getting oriented to where everything was. As Bob said it was great for getting to Kilmainhaim Gaol and the Guinness Brewery...pretty far if you are going to walk to those sites.

Have a great time and Slainte! ;)

Ditto to the above -- great information, usually a very entertaining guide (if you get a stinker, then hop off -- and hop on the next bus!) :)

Thanks everone for the help. Still not sure if I should visit the Guinness Brewery. Have read that it really isn't worth a visit except for the view from the upstairs bar. Thoughts??

I personally enjoyed it, and my DH loved it. He's a Guinness fan, but I'm not. The advertising level was very interesting to me (included the European ads that we hadn't seen). The little dancing deer stayed in my mind for months!

The view from the gravity bar is indeed fantastic!

Other than that, it was ok. I wouldn't go again, but I don't regret going that time :)

Again, thank you Green Dragon. More questions...have you eaten at Patrick Guilbaud? Gets great reviews and two Michelin stars. Staying at the Westin, did I make a good choice?

GreenDragon Mar 27th, 2006 03:21 PM

I have not eaten there, or stayed at the Westin. Perhaps someone else can help... SiobhanP?

BTW, Siobhan... an odd coincidence, my chosen name in my medieval society is Siobhan :)
