Drop Off Car/Train to Rome
 

We will be renting a car in late November in Florence and will be touring Tuscany with our home base Villa Bordoni in Greve. We will be going to Rome via train for a couple of days at the end of our Tuscany stay. Looking for advice where to pick up the train and drop off the car. We don't want to drive into Rome. Thanks in advance.

we did the reverse of what you are doing and picked up our car in chiusi.....rental agent is just across the street from the train station.

Did they reopen a car rental across from the station in Chiusi. There used to be an Avis there, but I thought others had reported it was gone, and you had to take a taxi up to the "high town" to get a rental car.

If you already have the car, frankly I'd probably just drive it to Rome especially if it isn't an extra day's rental -- or maybe even if it is. It's still probably cheaper than the train tickets. I personally don't feel that with good directions it's so hard to drive into the fringes of Rome to return a car -- but returning one at FCO airport in Rome is REALLY EASY. And you can take a train from there into the city, or better yet, reserve www.romeshuttlelimousine.com for 35 euros to take you right to your hotel in the city -- easier and cheaper than the train plus a taxi or bus.

I agree with Neo, I would drive to FCO also. In fact when I was leaving a two week rental stay in Assisi that is what I did. I took the autostrada the whole way to the airport and just followed the signs to the rental agency.

Chiusi has a Hertz across the street and a Europcar about a block and a half from the train station. Florence would be the fastest.

I'm glad to hear it's really easy to get in and out of FCO with a rental car. Actually reading this post made my husband and I look into changing our car rental location from p/u in sienna to p/u at FCO, increased our reservation for 1 day and only cost us $3 USD more. :-) Can't complain... sounds like less of a headache then finding a bus to Sienna and finding hte rental car place.

Smart move. Incidentally, I seem to have more trouble returning rental cars at US airports -- in the wrong lane, can't find the right exit, etc.-- that at FCO, where it was as easy as it gets, well marked and simple to follow.

Now I suggest you don't make the usual mistake of trekking over to the FCO train station, buying two tickets and taking the train to Termini, then getting a taxi to your hotel. Romeshuttlelimousine is not only so much easier -- but cheaper too.

We left our car in Orvieto. I think it was Hertz which was very near the train station.
