Is there a substancial fee for rental car drop offs at either the Nice or marseille airports or any other pick up / drop off points-How does one work this?

The only time there is a substantial fee for dropping a car off at an airport is when the country of drop-off is different from the country where the car was rented. jAnd then it's anywhere that you return a car, not just at the airport.

Perhaps you are thinking about airport rental agencies' charging more than those downtown?

The $270 just has to be for returning a car in a different company for where you plan to rent it. Otherwise'we've never run into a separate airport dropoff charge for a rental within the same country.

There is often a surcharge of about $30 for pickup/dropoff at airports.

Your rental agency should tell you how much you will save if you pickup/dropoff in town.

It is my recent experience that rental car companies won't charge drop off fees if pick-up and drop off are at major gateways/airports; i.e. I picked up a car at Seville's Santa Justa Station (major bus station) and dropped off at Madrid's Barajas Airport. No surcharge. Only way to know for sure is call the rental car company.

Even if there's a small surcharge for airport drop-off, you can balance it against what it would cost to take a taxi from your hotel.

One thing nice about the airport: it's easy to find.

I haven't paid any drop-off charge for renting a car at Marseille airport and then dropping at Avignon train station, for example. However, I would imagine this depends on the company, so you should ask the one you are considering. If there is an airport location dropoff fee, I wouldn't think it would be that much.

There were no drop off fees when we rented in France. Picked up at MRS airport, and dropped at TLS railroad office.
