Can I use my Droid X to send and receive calls in France and Italy?

It depends on which cell service you have, which company do you use?

If it is a quad band phone, yes, and assuming your carrier has agreements with the NUMEROUS ones in Europe

I am with Verizon. Will that work?

No, I do not believe the Droid X is a global phone. It is a CDMA phone and you would need a 3G phone. Verizon's 3G global phones include the following:

If you buy one of the global phones (I have the Droid 2 Global and like it very much), you then have the option of using one of Verizon's International Service Plans, but you'll need to call their Global Support line to set that up; or you could have the phone unlocked through Global Support if you've been a customer in good standing for over 60 days and have had the phone for a specified period of time. If you unlock the phone, you can insert a SIM card for your country of choice and get significantly better rates. That's probably what I'm going to do.

If you don't want to buy a new phone, you could always rent one.

We also have a Samsung Intensity II phone with Verizon. Do you think it would work in Europe?

Sorry, vermontdad, the specs for the Samsung Intensity indicate that it is a CDMA-only phone; not a quad-band.

According to Verizon, the phones they currently offer that will work in France & Italy (3G network) are the Droid 2 Global; the Blackberry Bold 9650, the LG Pantheon; the Blackbery Strorm 2 9550 and the HTC Imagio.

If it's a quad band, and you can get it unlocked (lots of places online will do it for $30 or so) then your best bet is to buy a SIM card when you're in Europe, then buy a prepaid card like you do at home. It should be way cheaper than most international roaming plans/ You'll get a local number with the SIM card, so all incoming and outgoing calls will be local. When you go to France, say, from Italy, I read it's really not necessary to buy a new sim card there because they're both EU countries and their rates (though technically international) are very low
