It can be argued that the concept of "driving" and "vacation" in Northern Italy are mutually exclusive. The traffic is dense, the signage is poor, parking can be scarce, and the centers of many of the cities are pedestrian-only districts that will ticket you by camera/mail months after you return home.

None of this is true of Tuscany, however, provided that you find the large parking areas outside cities like Florence or Siena rather than driving in, and it may not be true of the far northern, Alpine areas.
