Driving Toll Roads etc.

Does anyone have any advice to give about driving in Italy, toll roads etc? How do you pay at the tolls? When we were in Portugal we got a ticket and then when took an off-ramp, we stopped at a booth and they charged by how far we drove. The tolls were fairly expensive but the toll roads were great while the other roads were really not well- maintained. Is this the same in Italy? Any advice would be well-appreciated. We are mostly driving in Tuscany which I don't expect will be an issue. We are picking up the car in Florence and then we will return when we get to Rome after we drop our bags at our hotel. Any advice or words of wisdom would be great. Thanks.

Hi Sprig, that is exactly how I remember it when my late DH and I drove (bombed?) around Italy.

Now I am in the various cars with my friends who are Italian. They all have a "Fast Pass" or whatever it is called that is on their windshield that records the toll. I THINK for tourist what you experienced in Portugal is still the same in Italy. Hopefully someone else here with more uptodate information will advise you.
Have a fun trip!!

I hope someone can verify my info. We drove all over Italy in year 2000. We used the Autostrada (toll) a lot. Often, when you exit, there is an unmanned meter. You place your ticket into the slot and it reads it, and tells you how much you owe. Next, I did not know what to do, but for some reason, I shoved my Visa card into that same slot, and it worked. The charges came thru on my credit card!!

I remember this pretty clearly, as I thought it was very neat.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
