Driving to Rome

We are driving from Montalcino to Rome on a saturday late afternoon. We have two options:
1. Drop the car off north of Rome and take the train in with luggage.
2. Drop the car off at Fiumincino airport, leave the luggage at the airport (only staying a night in Rome), and train into Rome.

Is traffic around the ring road and to the airport bad? Is #2 just a dumb idea? thanks

many will advise you to take drop the car in orvieto and take the train into rome.

there's also the drive into rome option...

The ring road is usually more like a parking lot than like a freeway - if you get what I mean. Not exactly my idea of fun.

I'd tend to agree with #1. But it depends a bit on how much luggage.
Re option 2: where at the airport would you leave the luggage?

Late Sat. I doubt if the car office is open in Orvieto---drop at FCO. I would take the route via Grosetto and A-12 from Montalcino.
