Driving to Lake Maggiore and Lake Como

I can't seem to find hints about driving from
Lucca to Stresa, from Stresa to Varenna or
Varenna to Milan (Malpensa Airport). Does
anyone have suggestions as to which routes to
use, easiest, especially in August & September? Also, from Varenna to Malpensa
for our flight, which would be the fastest
route? Can we use the car while in Varenna
or will it be too crowded?
Thanks for your help...

I've never driven in Varenna but it is not a LARGE village and this past May there didn't seem to be a lot of traffic..it is more or less off the main highway from Lecco northbound. The town, as you probably already know, is perched on a rather steep hillside on the shores of the lake and except around the ferry dock stayed pretty quiet traffic-wise. There was a considerably greater amount of road traffic across the lake in Menaggio. Hope this helps give you a bit more perspective.

Dear gtrav,

Try this: http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyT...764565885.html

I just bought it and I'm glad I did. I believe it's fresh off the presses. Enjoy!

Sorry gtrav. It's a 2002 edition but still a great resource.

Which side of the legs is easier
driving south to Milan? I know I saw
messages months ago, but can't seem to
locate them now? Does anyone have any
information?
Thanks.
