Driving to Cortina in January from Venice

We are planning to drive from Venice to Cortine, west to Bolzano then south around Lake Garda then back to Venice in 5 days. Do they close the roads from Cortina to Bolzano when it snows? Is this a reasonable drive for Texans who have not driven in snow in 21 years?

They dont usually close the roads (unless there is a heavy snow fall that blocks traits of roads), but you need to have the chains on all 4 wheels in order to drive along the snowy roads and pay attention to the possible ice on the surface. Italians are bad drivers and they dont usually pay attention to the basic security rules (most still refuse to put on the safety belt even if it is complusory to have it on!!! this is just a hint). Unfortunately we hear lots of news on tv about car accidents on the roads.
