Driving the ring road

We are usually do in on our own types and were wondering if we could see just as much in 6-8 days by driving around the ring road on our own rather than doing Icelandic Air Holidays drive yourself around the ring in 10 to 15 days (they arrange your farm and hotel stays) but then we would be locked in to the 10 day or 15 day tour? Anyone out there driven the ring road? What was your driving experience? How did you find the quality of the road? Distance covered each day? Thanks.

I'm sorry if I appear stupid but where is the "ring road"? I'm familiar with the Ring of Kerry, for example, but I'm not sure of where you're questioning.

Hi,

yes, I drove the ring road a year ago, and it was totally fine. It was a lot of fun. We did it in 8 days. We drove a lot, but it was not too much. We covered an average of 100 miles per day, more or less. If you have 10 days all the better, but you can do it in a week if you want to. It's much better to do it on your own than join those organized tours. Iceland is quiet, safe, and wonderful. Let me know if you need any more info.
