Driving the Connor Pass
Could anyone who's driven the Connor Pass in Ireland and lived to tell the tale give me an idea of what it's like? I keep going back and forth on whether to do it. I'd drive on the way in to Dingle, not towards Galway, to keep the car against the cliffs and away from the drop. How scary is it?

I guess bad is relative, isn't it. I didn't think it was bad at all. A scenic drive, and I'm sure, a little daunting to a nervous driver. But it doesn't compare at all to something like Independance Pass in Colorado or many mountain passes in my opinion. The road is narrow mainly, but none of those infinite drop offs like high mountain passes. It's not even the scariest in the west of Ireland. I felt the Healey Pass on Beara was trickier.

Carolynk -- You might have to decide on the fly. A few years ago we weren't sure about whether to do it, but the frightening black clouds moving in just then convinced us not to. I have a photo of me with the cloud in the background and my hair blowing every which way that we took to remind us why we chickened out!

Doriana--your're right, of course. So much of our trip to Ireland will be weather-dependent. It's frustrating to think that we may miss things we really want to see because of fog, storms, etc., but at least we'll have a good reason to come back.

carolynk, I drove the Connor Pass and lived to tell about it! At the time I was not certain that would be the outcome. First, the automatic car we ordered was unavailable when we picked up our rental. Shifting with my left hand was not as bad as I expected but, as we started out from Dingle, fog came in and we wound up driving about 10 mph with our emergency blinkers on over the pass.
That said, perhaps not being able to see to appreciate the peril we were in was a good thing.
I would probably do it again and hope for sunny weather!
