Driving routes from Athens - Delphi - Meteora - Athens
We will be renting a car for 3 days (2 overnights) to drive to Delphi (overnight) and then continuing on to the Monasteries of Meteora the next day (overnight).
Returning to Athens city location from Kalambaka area.
Question:
1. What is the best route from Athens to Delphi? I am thinking E 94 our of Athens connecting to E 962 north to Delphi. (could detour at Distomo for Ocios Lukas Monastery)
2. What is the preferred route from Delphi to Kalambaka (Meteora)? I was thinking route E65 north thru Lamia, Karditsa, Trikala to Kalambka. BUT: Via Michelin routing uses E65 North to pick up E75 just below Lamia then E92 west to Kalambak.
3. Is the Via Michelin route from Delphi to Meteora preferred? Why? It looks much longer to me on the map but if that is the best, most efficient route then that is fine. I am assuming the E75 is toll? Correct?
4. Is the route back to Athen from Meteora E92 to E 75 best?
5. We are renting from National Rental which office is downtown at #2 Strimonos. This location looks like easy access to Both route E 962 leaving Athens and E 75 returning to Athens.
THANKS SO MUCH TO YOU ALL!
Mary Ann

Last trip (and the one before) I took the E962 via Elefsina and Thebes and returned by the National Road E75. The former was much the more pleasant drive with great scenery and little traffic.

I think most maps will try to put you on the major E75... I haven't driven that far north for almost 40 years but if I have time and given a choice I usually take the smaller road.

The E75 is going to be faster but busier.

Try one route there and another back...

Good! You'll take the same route to Delphi as I have twice. I don't see Strimonos on my map but driving in Athens is no big deal if you can drive in a big city. Greek drivers are, um, enthusiastic. Keep your wits, plan your route and avoid rush hours and you'll have no trouble.
Outside the city you'll be expected to put 2 wheels onto a paved shoulder to let a faster car past. Stay out of the right lane on divided highways except to pass. Pay attention when rounding bends or cresting hills... as I said, Greek drivers are enthusiastic. Stay away from the center line on curves and hills. That said, I love driving in Greece and hope you do too!
