driving route from York to Inverurie (Scotland)
We leave York on a Sunday and need to arrive in Iverurie by Monday evening. Should we drive along the coast or inland? What should we see on the way? Also do you have any suggestions for a town in between to stay on the Monday night? We were thinking of St Andrews, but we have been there twice before, so maybe somewhere new?

Quickest route would be up the west coast motorways as far as Glasgow then cutting across to the east coast
You could head up the west coast then cut off up the A7 towards Galashiels or Jedburgh which would take about 3 hours.
Another option would be to continue to Galsgow then head to Stirling for the night

Quickest route is about 6 1/2 hours so you could do it in a single day.
There is a marginally shorter route which follows the A1 all the way to Edinburgh and up the east coast. That route would take maybe an hour longer.
Given that you have plenty of time, might you think about Perth? or Dunkeld? and come over Glenshee and down the Don?
Indulge my curiosity- why Inverurie? (I live 6 miles away)

Thanks for the replies Alan + Sheila.
We are going to Inverurie to visit family - and looking forward to seeing the Moray coast whilst we are there.
I suppose what I am wanting to know is which is the more interesting route from York - up the A1 coast, or via the A68? And also what towns/sites we should see on the way? Because we have 2 days to get there and we will be visiting Glasgow later, we don't want to use the west coast motorway from York.
We are thinking now we will stay overnight in Anstruther rather than St Andrews.

Definitely use the A1, rather than the A68- although bits of it are beautiful too.
Think about staying in North Berwick. Stop off and see Eyemouth, St Abb's Head, Dunbar, Gullane and when you reach the city bypass, take that- or you'll get immersed in the tram roadworks.
Any of the East Neuk villages would be nice to stay in, allthough I'd probably choose Pittenweem or Elie rather than A'nster.
Would you have time for a small libation when you're here?
