Driving Rome to Capri
 

Our travel plan is to drive a rental car from Rome airport to Capri. We will be staying on Capri for a week before returning to Rome for a week. Fodor book has now raised questions on advisabilty of this plan. 1)Rental car agencies require special theft insurance to drive car in Naples/Amalfi Coast area. 2)Parking in a secure place in the area is "expensive"....what does mean? How much? 3)A car on Capri is said to be redundant and more of a hindrance. Appreciate comments on any or all parts of our plan. How have others made this trip?

We left the car in the Garage Marina Piccola at the Porto di Sorrento. Expensive.

You can;t take a car to Capri - passengers only. You need to find a secure place on the mainland (and I have no idea where in Naples would be secure).

We always stayed at a hotel in Naples Wingman before going to Capri. The hotel garaged our rental car and consequently allowed us to leave our rental car whereever they garaged it while we were on Capri.

I have never heard of a car ferry that goes to Capri.

I would suggest that you train from Rome to Naples and take the hydrofoil to Capri and back again. And than take the train from Naples to Rome. You will not need or want a rental car in Rome. Best regards.

Leave your car in Sorrento it's safer.Plus a bunch of ferries leave from there everyday. There is no need for a car on Capri. Got back from Capri in April is was beautiful.

Are you planning any stops between the Rome airport and wherever you park the car before catching the Capri ferry? If not, don't rent the car until after your stay on Capri.

If you think it will save you time getting to the ferry, consider the time spent at the rental agency (not the same experience as in the U.S.) and finding your way to wherever you're going to park, presumably while jetlagged or just tired from your flight.

You might be able to hire a car service from the airport to the Naples ferry dock for the same (or less) amount of money as the rental plus a week's parking fees. Try www.romelimousines.com. It's an American owned and operated company that will give you a quote by email.

In Naples, you can take a cab to the Molo Beverello docks for a boat to Capri.

Forget the car--bad idea.

You have all convinced me to give up the rental car from Rome and having it available for local use in Naples. Thank you.
However, having difficult time trying to read train info to purchase tickets to Naples. Probably could if it was French but not Italian. Is there a web site that is in English? Do we need to reserve/purchase train tickets in advance.
Also, what is "supplement" paid on some tickets?

First you'll need to take the shuttle train from the airport to Roma Termini. Change to a train bound for Napoli Centrale. Plug in the two station names (in Italian) and the date you're travelling, and the site will give you all the options. There is a key to decipher all the train types (ES, IC, etc.).

You don't mention when your trip is, but you probably don't need to book and purchase your tickets in advance. If you do purchase in advance, make sure you give yourself a couple of hours to get through baggage collection, customs/passport control, taking the shuttle and finding your way to the track (binario) for the Naples train. You can buy the train shuttle and Naples tickets at the airport train station.
