Driving/parking in Santorini

I want to rent a car while in Santorini but find that most of the hotels I'm interested in do not offer parking facilities. Can one get around the island by public transportation? Or should I just rent for one day and not try to park overnight? Any suggestions?

Ease of parking will depend somewhat on when you're there. The closer to the middle of the season it gets the more difficult it is to find parking space. Each village has parking, both on-street and in small community lots. There are even a few small private lots that charge a fee, but they're few and far between. The island has an excellent bus system but it stops running early in the evening unless you're there from July through August when the schedule is extended to around midnight. There are also taxis available.

These village maps will show the parking lots, designated with a "P" in a little blue box.

When you enter a village just look around you for parking space. If you rent a Smart Car you can fit into the smallest of spots. Or if you're confident renting a moped or ATV you can easily find a place to park just about anywhere.

We stayed in Oia and while we were there we arranged through the hotel to rent a car for two or three days. We received a small car but it had enough room for us to roam about and explore the island. We parked mostly at the more remote beaches and on the street near our hotel. We had no problem. In case you are stopping there, we did the same thing in Naxos. We enjoyed the opportunity to explore on our own on both islands.

Thanks to you both, especially for the bus schedules.
