Driving over Sea

Current winter has been so generously cold that ice roads to Estonian islands will likely open sometime late January or early February (unless, of course, weather will turn seriously warm meanwhile).

What is an ice road? It is, well, route marked and prepared on ice for driving passenger cars over the frozen Baltic sea. The longest distance here is 25 km route from mainland to Hiiumaa island, while there are several shorter (up to about 7 km) routes as well. The thickness and condition of ice cover is constantly monitored and in case of potential danger the use of route is stopped.

I decided to post this notice, because driving over sea is truly an unique experience, most people cannot even imagine that such things can exist. Sufficiently cold winters have been rare, too, longer ice routes were last open in 2005 and 2006.

If you happen to this area (Baltics, Finland, Scandinavia) in February or March, this can be one of the highlights of your trip.

Sounds exciting! Indeed, I had never heard of that option. Unfortunately I won't make it back to Estonia in the next months (I thoroughly enjoyed my trip last September and am planning to return).
