Driving Nuremberg to Fussen in July
My husband and I will be driving from Nuremberg to Fussen and I am looking for recommendations on interesting places to stop along the way. We have one day to do it and plan to spend most of the day enroute - getting an early start and arriving in Fussen late afternoon.
I am thinking we will drive west and then head south and pick up part of the Romantic Road - check out some of the towns and countryside along the way.
I think that the route may be too long to stay on secondary roads the entire way, so that will necesitate taking the highway for part of the route to make up time.
What do you all think? Any particularly scenic stretches we should make sure to drive? Any particularly interesting towns or sights we should plan to see?
After spending a few days in the Fussen area, we will be driving on to Munich - taking most of a day for that drive. Any good recommendations there are appreciated as well.

Hi J,
Rothenburg is certainly worth a stop if you are on the Romantic road, although its charms are easier to appreciate early or late in the day when the crowds are gone. If you are pressed for time, Dinklesbuhl gives you almost the same look and feel as Rothenburg, but it is a bit easier to visit as a quick pitstop off the romantic road.
As far as scenery goes for me, the middle of Germany isn't nearly as beautiful as the south. It's quite a treat to see the snow-covered mountains in the distance as you drive further south toward Austria.
I assume you will be visiting the castles, and taking the gondola to the top of the Zugspitze? Both are worthwhile. My wife liked the little side trip we took in the area to the Weiskirche; I thought the drive was OK but I was a bit underwhelmed with the church. In Garmisch, you can walk through the Partnacklam sp? Gorge.
In Munich, make sure to visit several beer gardens, which give you a great chance to meet all sorts of friendly people.

Thanks for the recommendations.
Dinklesbuhl sounds like a good choice. I saw it on the map and liked the name, so I was hoping it would be an interesting place as well
While in the Fussen area, we are definitely going to visit the castles and go to the top of the Zugespitze. Also do some light hiking and general wandering around. We have 2 full days plus the day to drive from there into Munich.
We are definitely going to spend some time in biergartens in Munich - it is my whole reason for going, well that and the Deutches Museum Ok, well maybe not my WHOLE reason for going, but when I day dream about Munich, biergartens are the first thing that come to mind.

Andechs is also a good beer and food stop but stay and check out church also can be done on way to Munich but also on s bahn out of Munich.
Fuessen area Wies church and Linderhof and oberammergau. We have also driven to Lindau on Bodensee for the day from Fuessen but I would stay closer if this is your first time in area.
On the way to Fuessen there is wonderful Basilika in Ottobeuren. Do a google search and pick images for some pictures of Ottobeuren. We usually stop there on way to Fuessen. It is only about 15 minutes off of freeway and makes a very good stop. DK book on munich and bavaria also has some pictures and info.

I second the suggestion of visiting Ottobeuren. While there, check the outside of the abbey. It is a real clever way to give the wall construction a three-dimensional look. The inside of the church is impressive and the organ is world-famous. If you can't hear it, at least get a CD. I have one with Franz Lerndorfer (former music propfesssor and head organist at
the Munich Dom (cathedral) playing the Ottobeuren organ. It's great if you like organ music.
I don't know if you want to fit it into your drive, but look at the map and look up Treuchtlingen. Between T. and Eichstaett is a very pretty section of the Altmuehltal (Altmuehl valley). That part is a nature park.
You could drive from Dinkelsbueh to Wassertruedingen (21km) to Treuchtlingen (22km) and from there to Eichstaette (36km), and then on to Neuburg an der Donau/Danube(23km) and from there to the A-7 Autobahn (32km). Treuchtlingen itself is nothing to write home about, but it's the start of this pretty Altmuehltal drive. These are good roads, but not very fast (about 50km/h).

Hi J,
You might want to consider going to www.viamichelin.com and entering "Nuremburg" to "Fussen" via Augsburg, Oberammergau, and Linderhof.
Driving time is about 5 hr, and leaves you some time to see the sights along the way.

If you are a beer lover, I would ditto the recommendation to stop at Andechs. Great beer! They have dining halls there. It is in Andechs, Germany and will be on your way to Munich...sort of. Countryside and lakes around the area are also very scenic.
Partnach Gorge is also fun to do. Does not take that long, but is a fun walk if you are in Garmisch.
Ettal Abbey, Oberammergau and Linderhof: All must sees when in the area around Fussen. Do the drive from Fussen north to Wies Church (I enjoyed the church) then over to Oberammergau and back into Garmisch. Nice drive and plenty to see.

I have a question about visiting churches in general. I am not a religious person, and although I went to Catholic and Episcopalian schools growing up and have been to weddings, funerals, baptisms/christenings, etc. in many different churches, I am basically neutral with regard to religion.
So, I guess my question is - do churches hold much interest for the non-religious?

In deciding of whether to visit some of the suggested churches, just think of visiting interesting architecture and art. If you are interested in those, then you will be intrigued by visiting the churches.
Otherwise, plan your itinerary around scenery and experiencing the ambience of towns and cities - - Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuiehl, the Altmuehltal, The drive between Fuessen and Garmisch, a visit to the Zugspitze, etc. The Wieskirche is as much about scenery than the interior. The church sits in the middle of maedows, with the mountains as backdrop and is not that much out of your way. Ottobeuren would be more out of the way.
Personally, I think the Fuessen castles are overrated as sights for architecture and art, but the views of them and from them is nice.
Obviously, the Deutsche Museum -which you intend to visit - is all in a class by itself. I can spend a whole day there, again and again.
