Driving Munich to Prague

We will be driving from Munich to Prague in June. Just wondering if anyone has any tips or recommendations of places to stop at (to see or to eat at). Thanks!

Still in Germany, I would recommend Regensburg.
Very nice old town, and impressive palace (if you have time for that). Also easy access from A93 motorway which you will probably take.

I remembered posting on this exact same question on this forum in June 1997! Hope it still applies: basically, we planned our cross on to the Czech Republic for the first thing in the AM and this is why: in the AM you have a lot of commercial cargo crossing from Germany. Guards pay closer attention to the cargo and passenger cars get very little attention. Our crossing took about 20 secs! We overnighted in the border German town of Furth i Wald. Cute town. From the border we stopped at a town called Pilzen to exchange money; unremarkable town. We stopped at a local bank and I took a 100 dollar bill to exchanged. The commotion on the bank was palpable. Every single employee came to inspect the bill; it looked more like a training session. Quite a cultural experience! I also remembered the evidence of acid rain on the forested areas on our way in to Prague.

It has been 10+ years; I definitely hope to be back again.

Great story Viajero!! One more question, my notes from looking on via michelin show that the drive should be about 4 hours, does that seem accurate?

Spot on :-D

4 hours minus 20 seconds since there are no more border controls ;-)

One more question I thought I would tag on to my original one. We never exchange money before we travel, just use ATMs once we arrive, however, usually we are flying into an EU country and then just moving from one EU country to another.

Since we will be driving from Munich to Prague, should I get some Czech koruna in the states before we leave? Will I need money in the Czech Republic to buy something before we actually hit Prague? Isn't there some sort of car stamp I will need to buy?

You may want to do what we did; hit a bank/ATM as soon as you crossed the border. Do try to get currency soon after crossing, at least.

You need a toll sticker for Czech motorways. Either get it at the border crossing, or try to get one in advance while in Munich at the downtown offices of ADAC (German equivalent of AAA).
In the Czech Republic you can get them at gas stations or post offices.

cowboy-- is the sticker thingy a new requirement? I don't recalled having to get one, not even heard of it. ?

It's not exactly new.
But maybe you did not use any motorways when you went to CZ.

Thank you this information has been very helpful. I think we will try to buy the sticker in Munich if it is convenient.
