Driving maps for Italy

My husband and I will be driving from Rome to Naples (via Montecassino and Caserta) and from Naples to Sorrento (Via Pompeii). Spend 3 days in Sorrento touring the Amalfi coast and Capri and drive back to Rome.

How or where can I get good driving maps - and is there a site like "map quest" on line for Italy?

"and is there a site like "map quest" on line for Italy?"

Yea, it's called Mapquest. Just go to Mapquest and after clicking "driving instructions" click "Europe". Enter you cities and click the appropriate country for route planning, etc.

By the way, one trick about driving in Italy -- you can often ignore the numbers on routes. It seems no matter how new the map is the route number may have changed. You'll find that your best success is simply following the markers indicating the direction to the city you are headed to. Of course, a map is still a great idea.

If you are a member of the auto club AAA they will give you road maps for any countries you want free of charge.

Yea, but their European road maps aren't so good. I recently picked up a few, Italy is combined with Austria and Switzerland. Not very detailed at all, but OK as a planner. They'll also give you a European Planner map -- one of the entire continent.

Thanks to the delightful people who populate this board with information (and I still cannot thank them enough for their help), I got some good information on my own driving trip through Tuscany. I hope in turn that what follows will be helpful to you.

I agree with Larry that AAA is a good source. In fact, I purchased a guide for Tuscany published by them which provides suggested driving itineraries and maps. You may wish to see if they have a similar guide for Naples. I know they have one for Rome and vicinity. Also contact them for maps.

You may wish as well to check out the guide published by the Touring Club of Italy, which contains itineraries for all areas of Italy. In addition to the guide, their maps for different regions in Italy (recommended scale 1:200 000 and available like the guide at B&N or Borders) are very good. Buona fortuna!

Recommend the Michelin "Italy Tourist and Motoring Atlas." We have used the France atlas extensively in the past and are assuming the Italian atlas will be as useful when we drive Italy next Fall.

You can get it at Borders, Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com.

Enjoy your trip.

Yes, the Italian Michelin Atlas works in Italy as well as the France Atlas in France. We have used them both and highly recommend them both.

I found this site tonight after not being able to get into mapquest for Italy. http://mappy.com/uk. It was great for getting driving times and distances.
