driving Lucca to Sorrento - crazy?
 

Hi,

After spending a week doing day trips from Lucca, we are heading down to Sorrento. We will have a car in Lucca, and thought about driving from there, along the coast, to our next stop, Sorrento. We will get rid of the car at that point.

I know it will be a long drive, but is it a pretty drive? Interesting places to stop along the way to break up the drive? Is it winding? Or is the whole idea crazy and we should break up the trip and spend the night somewhere? If so, where?

BTW, we are a family of four (kids 8, 10)going in Sept/Oct.

I've driven from Montalcino to Rome along the coast. Boring and lots of trucks. I can't speak for Rome south.

We drove from Orvieto to the Amalfi Coast on the A1 autostrada. Except for a little traffic north of Naples it was a very pleasant drive. And although I'm a proponent of doing the secondary roads once we were south of Rome the hilly countryside was lovely. Since we left Orvieto early afternoon, we chose to stop in Caserta, just above Naple, for the night before continuing on to the Amalfi Coast. The town itself is a pretty industrial place, but the Royal Palace and Gardens there will amaze you.

Can it be reasonably done in Summer if begun at approximately 3-4 in the afternoon?

Crazy? Well, no. Unwise? Well, yes. Take the train. Saves nerves, money, and perhaps your lives. Lucca to Pisa, on to Rome. Then on to Naples, and finally direct to Sorrento. Piece of cake.

I have done that---not too bad. But, the coast road will be slower--look at the bypass that takes you away from Rome on A-1 to A-3. If you must stop then Orvieto is the best option.

Nevertooold, mapquest says the drive takes 6 hours....
