Driving - London to Edinburgh?

First time driving London to Edinburgh. Going with son to British Open. Any advice would be appreciated.

Stay on the left hand side of the road!

Distance from London to Edinburgh is 420 miles. Figure 8 hours driving time. You can drive 70 mph comfortably on the motorways. You are likely to encounter some traffic slow-ups around larger cities.

Take M40 from M25. 120 miles to Birmingham. Take M6 north from Birmingham. 200 miles to Carlisle. M6 becomes M74 just north of Carlisle. M74 to Glasgow, 100 miles. At Glasgow, take M8 to Edinburgh.

My son and I will be in St. Andrews for the summer and will probably be working the Open (marshaling or score-keeping). Send me your e-mail address and maybe we can make connections.

Cheers,

Jinx, you going to make it up here, this year?

I'd follow Jinx's route, but when you get to Carlisle take the A7. It' will take a little bit longer but it's much more scenic than the A74/M8!
