Driving in Scotland Question

Is it necessary to have an international driver's permit in Scotland (if you have a US driver's license)? I don't recall having one for England or Ireland, or ever reading that one was needed. My husband is going to Scotland in May and says several guide books have mentioned that one is necessary. I thought the main purpose was to translate your driver's license information into the local language. Since they speak English in Scotland why would it be necessary?

There are no driving regulations separate from England in Scotland. What is legal south of the border is also legal there. You don't need an IDP for US licence holders in UK.

Thanks Alec, that's what I thought. Now if a few more people could just confirm this I can convince my husband that he doesn't need one.

Spent last springbreak there with our children.
We rented a car through Enterprise Leasing (they picked us up!) and we did NOT need anything other than our US Driver's lisence.

I hope he has fun!

No you don't need on in the UK. I always recommend having a good co-pilot so the driver who is driving on the wrong side of the road can concentrate. Have a great time.

No he definitely doesn't need an IDP. But if your husband is determined - they only cost $10 ($15 some places) and if it makes him feel all warm and fuzzy - let it go . . . .

Save your ammunition for more important and/or expensive battles.
