Driving in Sardinia

Hi

I am going to Sardinia this weekend with 4 friends. Someone suggested hiring a car to get around because they said that there is little public transport. Is that true?

How easy is it to drive around Sardinia? We are going to base ourselves in Alghero for 2 days.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

I can tell you that driving in Sardinia was fine. With so little time you don't want to be limited by bus schedules. You can rent through http://www.rent.it

Thanks. No offense to anyone but I am female - are the roads easy to drive around and will it be easy to find where we would want to go or a bit of a nightmare? Any suggestions on where I could find an online map?

I'm also female, and I was with my dad (I did all the driving). I found it easy to navigate, but then again I have felt this way in many areas of Italy, Greece & Turkey. I just love to drive in foreign countries! I believe I purchased a Michelin Map for the trip that was good.

thank you AP6380.

Did you have trouble finding parking? I have read your post on your Sardinia trip! Great report. thanks :)

We are staying at Hotel Catalunya. is the hotel easy to find?

I believe we parked at a parking lot near the hotel, it was no problem. I don't remember having a hard time finding it, but something I always fail to do that I think is helpful (when visiting towns like Alghero) which are small but can be crowded is to try and get good directions directly to the hotel. It's August, so it will be very busy there.

I was in Sardinia during June. Didn't rent a car and tried to use the bus system. The hotel told me where the bus station was in Olbia twice, and when I arrived at the station it was locked up. They said they moved it. In the meantime, I missed the bus.

The trains work pretty good around the island. But be aware, all rental cars are NOT automatic and the roads are narrow.

thanks for all the input. I'm struggling to find rental availability though but hopefully will find something!
