Driving in Naples, Italy

My family will be spending a week on the Amalfi Coast (Marina del Cantone) in Italy in late June. We will be arriving via train into Naples. Most of us will take a car service to Marina del Cantone. We would like to have a small car on hand because my sister is having difficulty walking. We will also need to bring her back to the train station mid-week and we would like to be able to assist her with her baggage. We are used to driving in NYC and that can be a chaotic. How crazy is the drive from the Naples train station to the highway?

The common response is to NOT drive in Naples because of traffic and chaos. However, this may depend a bit on the time of day and where you are going. We recently traveled by car from Matera to Naples to drop off a car so that we could catch a ferry to Ischia. I was very anxious about it. It was mid-day, and we found that coming in from a major highway to the port of Naples was very easy and with little traffic. It sounds like your travel would simply be the reverse. I do strongly recommend that you have a GPS system of some kind to help you avoid any other pitfalls.
