driving in london will only slow you down....don't do it.....we found getting on the tour bus the best thing to do in every one of the big cities we visisted.....you will see 10 times the amount of things by bus than by auto...also, if you are going to rent a car to travel outside, i repeat, outside of london, then rent the car with your local AAA before you leave....it is much , much cheaper (at least half the price)....

I think perhaps it depends on who you are targeting with this statement. If its Americans or maybe other nationalities unfamiliar with driving on the left then you could have a point BUT you must remember this forum isn't exclusively for the North American market . . . driving in London isn't that bad - in places it can be quite grim but if you are daft enough to drive in the central areas of any major city of comparable size then you should expect problems.

I would be far more apprehensive (understandably) driving in Roma or Paris - to me, a Scotsman, it's the wrong side of the road.

We rented a car at the Marble Arch in London to drive to the countryside. BIG MISTAKE. It took over an hour to get out of London and it was just dumb luck that we got out at all. The experience was very, very stressful -- and we're used to driving in downtown Chicago. So much for "big city" driving experience. Rent from Heathrow -- much easier.
