driving in eastern europe

We are planning to fly to prague in the summer and drive to gdansk, warsaw, budapest, vienna and back to prague.

Has anyone taken this or a similar route? Any tips or suggestions? What about a good car rental company that will let us take the car to all of these countries.

Hi P,

I think that www.autoeurope.com will let you take the car to Poland and Hungary as well as Austria.

Thanks. I just checked autoeurope and they state that their cars cannot be taken in poland, among other eastern european countries.

Hi P,

AE is offering a Renault Megane for $368 for 1 week, pick up and dropoff in Gdansk.

I suggest that you call them

Recheck with Autoeurope. Sometimes their answers vary by cust.srv.rep. As I recall, their website says no, but humans say yes.

Check with gemut.com I don't remember without checking scrapbook the rental company we used (I think it was one of these two), but we went to HU, PL, SK, CR, AU thru it.

Try calling them and asking about insurance needs for E Europe. It was ten years ago now but we rented a car in Munich for a trip to Czech and Poland. There was some back and forth and we had to pay extra for insurance but it was possible.

The border guard in Germany was leery about letting our rental car into Czech but I showed him our insurance papers and he was persuaded that we had permission to take a German car to the land of high car theft.

There was so much talk of Russian car thieves back then that we were delighted each time we saw our car was right where we'd left it!

We had the same problem while renting a car in Budapest. The only company that we found that would let us take a car into Poland was Thrifty. We were happy with their service. Enjoy your trip.
