Hi, Kevin!
I typically rent a car for a week or two on each trip to Europe. The Frommer's books, Spain's Best Loved Driving Tours, for example, are great little books that outline driving tours offering lots of stops along the way.
My advice is it to get the Spain and France books and then ask specifics here.
Best of luck to you. I am sure you will enjoy your trip!
Gigi

Gigi,

Many thanks for your suggestion, I'll get them later today.

I know I'll enjoy the trip. I used to drive the autoroute to Nice while working in the conference business.
It will be nice to take my time & enjoy the Country side for a change.

Kevin

Kevin: I'd stick to a more westerly route - there's plenty to do and see along the way, and it's a shorter drive. There are plenty of possible routes; here's one:

Follow the coast to Collioure (stop to admire the harbor and check out the artists' wares), heading inland (west) around Perpignan. Stop at Albi for apeek at the Toulouse-Lautrec museum and breadbox cathedral, and spend your first night in Cahors (at the Hotel Terminus - best restaurant in the city). Next day, drive north through Limoges, stopping at Oradour-sur-Glane, then veer west to la Rochelle. Take a drive out to Ile de Ré in the evening and have dinner on the main square of St-Martin-Ile-de-Ré.
Next day drive to Angers and see first the tapestries in the château and then the modern spin-offs at the Musée Jean-Lurcé. Stop later in the day at Alençon to visit the lacemakers who've been there since Catherine de Medici brought them from Italy. Make a beeline for Calais.
