Driving Hamburg to München
Hi All,
Family of 3. Driving from Hamburg to Munich. Will be in Munich for 5 nights. its a 8 hour trip. I wanted to know if I can take a halt for 3 or 4 hours in between to reduce the fatigue as I haven't driven for 8 hours at a stretch anytime. I could split the trip then for a 1 night stay in between if possible and then drive till Munich the next day. Expert comments appreciated. |
Hi,
1) Why don't your travel by train? It takes less than 6 hours and you could drink beer in the restaurant car instead of driving. 2) If you have to drive and wish to break the drive into 2 days you may stop at Fulda, which is roughly at half way. It's by far not the prettiest or most famous German city, but it's nice enough to spend a night and half day and it's on your way. Or Bad Hersfeld? |

Train is costing me 300 euros and driving with my car will only cost me fuel charges that would be around 150 (Maximum) Let me check for fulda and Bad Hersfled. |
Or for about an hour farther from Fulda, you could stay in Würzburg which is definitely worth a day or two stop-over. I recall that Fulda has a nice old town but not extraordinary... we stayed there at the Romantik Hotel Goldener Karpfen, which was pretty nice 10 years ago...

Will you be travelling very soon? Because otherwise you'll never ever have to pay 300 Euro for that trip with a saver fare ...
It depends which route you are taking - via Kassel or via Leipzig. If via Kassel then this indeed places you around Fulda in the middle of the trip and this is a very fine destination https://www.tourismus-fulda.de/filea...Willkommen.pdf for which the modestly sceptical comments are completely unnecessary. You don't say when your trip takes place - if it is in sunnier times then a smaller town along the lines of Bad Hersfeld, Melsungen, Alsfeld, Lauterbach or Fritzlar would be a cozy place. A small detour would allow you to visit the Wartburg in Eisenach. If via Leipzig, well then the middle is pretty much Leipzig itself with Halle being a slightly smaller but still sizeable option. Again if you have your eye on a smaller cozy destination then Naumburg with its cathedral fits the bill perfectly. |
