driving Germany to Czech to Austria--=vignettes/ tax sticker

Hi all,

We will be driving from Frankfurt Germany to Prague and then to Vienna. I know we need vignettes/tax stickers for Czech and Austria. Any way to purchase ahead of time? Perhaps from Avis in Germany? Thanks for the advice.

Really not necessary (posible?).

For the Czech Republic, you can buy the vignette at the border. You only need it if you plan to use their autobahns.

For Austria the same is true. It is required for the autobahn and some Schnellstrassen (autobahn-like limited access highways). Depending from where you enter Austria. If from Germany on the A-8, you can get it at any service center in Bavaria along the Munich - Salzburg autobahn A-8. You must get it before you cross the border on the A-8. You can get it for various length of valid time, at various costs. If you come from the Czech Republic, any service station in Austria will sell it to you. Again, you must have it on your car as you enter the autobahn.

AVIS: It is unlikely that you will be able to get a (returned) car with a valid vignette.

I am sure yoiu are aware, that you have to tell AVIS that you will be taking your car into the Czech Republic. That will limit the makes and models hat will be available for you (insurance reasons).

I would buy in advance from the German Automobil Club (ADAC). Sometimes gas stations near the border sell the stickers, too.

The reason is that there are no border controls between Germany and Czech Rep. anymore and there might NOT be an option to buy right on the border (this is the case e.g. between Dresden and Prague, A17) and you may get a hefty fine before you even have the chance to buy a sticker (happened often).
