Driving from Zurich to Lake Como

We are going to be driving from Zurich to Lake Como in May. We did it years ago and it seemed fine but we can't remember how long it took us. Has anyone done this drive recently? Any advice?

The drive will take about 4 hours with no traffic going the Gotthard tunnel route, longer if going over the mountains. Avoid driving on Fridays and Sundays as traffic in the Gotthard tunnel is generally heavy on weekends.

If you aren't continuing on a car journey to other parts of Italy, I would recommend you take the train from Zurich. Not only is the train trip beautiful, but IMO a car in Lake Como is a liability; it is much faster to use the ferries to get between villages and parking in the villages if difficult to find. You certainly don?t' need a car in Zurich, as the best bits of the city are car-free and parking is very hard to find and quite expensive, unless you want to run out and feed meters every two hours.

Don?t forget that gas is US$4.50 a gallon here in Switzerland and about the same price in Italy. . . .
