driving from venice to trieste

my wife and i are planning a 3 week trip in September. Has anyone driven from Venice to Trieste.I would be interested in distance, time, etc. Also would it be wise to drop the car off in trieste before going on into croatia? Thanks.

There are trains every hour from Venezia to Trieste, with a journey time of about two hours. Is there any reason for driving?

Some car hire companies won't let you take the car abroad & some charge a punitive supplement. Are you going back to Italy after Croatia ? It may help us to advise if you provide your full itinerary. Why have you got a car for visiting Venice ?

Train to Trieste and get the car in Slovenia. There is an outlet for AE in Koper not far from Trieste.

We drove from Venice to Trieste and because we had the time, it took us a full day. We explored the small resort towns by the ocean along the way and found it very relaxing and interesting. We also found it useful to have a car in the Trieste area (which was our destination for the week) as there are day trips (Muggia et al) that are worthwile. If you have to give up your rental before carrying on to Croatia, at least keep it while you explore this fascinating and often over-looked city.

Thank you all for the information. We are still in the tentative stages of our planning. We will be flying into Venice then either renting a car or taking a train to Trieste. We want to explore the Istria Peninsula and eventually make our way down to Dubrovnik. Not sure about flying back to the states.
