Driving from Tuscany to Amalfi Coast
 

Would you recommend driving from Tuscany to the Amalfi coast or taking the train. Does anyone know how long both methods take?

You need to specify what town you're starting and ending.

Trains don't go to the Amalfi Coast per se. You can get to Sorrento via the commuter train from Naples; or you can get to Salerno by mainline train on the east end.

If you're going to need the car on the Amalfi coast it makes sense to keep the same car. And if you're going to be doing day trips to Pompeii, Naples etc I think you do need a car EXCEPT during high season. It will make everything much more convenient and faster.

During high season I would reco traveling by ferry (the Amalfi Drive is horrendous - and bus is even worse than car, since they are sometimes full and you have to wait not just for one but for the next). Car is a poor alternative to ferry - but beetter than bus. With a car you're stuck in traffic - but at least you sitting in comfort below the retaining wall, not stopping to let people on and off and don;t have to wait for one with room for you to stuff yourself on.

Train from Chiusi to Naples. At Naples train station take bus (it might be a streetcar) to the Port and from there take the ferry. We did that in reverse in September and it was glorious. About 1 1/2 hours from Naples to Positano, maybe 1 hour to Sorrento.
