Driving from Sorrento to Rome
 

My husband and I are travelling to Italy for 2 weeks this summer. Florence, Sorrento, and Rome. Originally my plan was to take the train from Sorrento to Rome (obvi with a stop in Naples to switch from the commuter to the high speed train). However, I just had a thought of driving. We have the full day for travelling. So, I have a few questions about this thought.....
Is there a place I can actually rent a car in Sorrento? I assumed so. I can google search this, so feel free to ignore this question....it's just my thinking out loud.
Is there a place I can drop off the car outside of Rome (like airport?)?? Cause I dont want to come anywhere near the city with a two foot pole (plus, I would be the person driving in a restricted zone anyways)
Are there any fun towns along the route to stop in? If not, then it kinda makes this driving trip a bit pointless as we would just see highway.
And the overall big question....is this the dumbest idea on the planet or have people done this?

Use www.viamichelin.com, enter your route from Sorrento to Rome and activate "Tourist sites". You will see three different routes and a multitude of attractions on the way.

My personal recommendation would be Hadrian's villa in Tivoli, near Rome. Another option would be Ostia Antica, near Ostia, on the coast.

Of course, you can drop the car at the airport in Fiumicino and take the train into Rome. But I would drive into Rome (actually I have been driving in Rome quite often). No hassle with restricted zones in Rome - it is a metropolis, not a village.

Take the train. The drive is a boring autostrada. Train saves the hassle of renting for what is essentially a two hour trip.

Traveller1959 is wrong - Rome is full of ZTL's.

I agree with Blueeyed. Just take the train. The drive on the autostrada is dull and Rome traffic is terrible and full of ZTL's.

And what you'd pay for a one-way rental for half a day could be steep.

Train is a much better choice.

We drove from Rome to Sorrento since we were starting a road trip to a bunch of smaller places - and it was fine for us since we had a hotel with free parking and it was May so we could use the are to go to Naples, Pompeii and drove down along the coast.

But if we weren't using the car afterwards we would not have had a car.

Not to take this thread on a whole other topic but do I have to book my train ticket from Naples to Rome in advance?? I recognize that there is a financial benefit for booking in advance. However, having to take the commuter train first from Sorrento to Naples, just want to avoid having a pre-booked train ticket and we end up missing said train.

Unless you're taking a very early train from Naples, shouldn't be a problem. Just catch an earlier run of the Circumvesuviana from Sorrento to the Naples train station. Here's the schedule: http://www.eavsrl.it/web/sites/defau...-%20Napoli.pdf. (But check in Sorrento for the latest schedule.)

You could take a taxi or a car and driver from Sorrento to Naples train station -- but I think you're more likely to encounter traffic delays than problems with the train. However that would be easier with luggage.
