Driving from Siena to Rome May 1
We will be driving from Siena to Rome on May 1 which I've been told is a major holiday. Does anyone know if we'll run into lots of traffic on that day? Any other suggestions regarding traveling on that day would be appreciated.

I drove it last year,my suggestion would be go into Rome either late night or early morning,Sunday is great.Of course you must be sure where you are going using a map .I'm talking 2.00 a.m. next thing check if where your staying has someone on the desk.I did that and it worked for me good luck.

There will be a huge concert in Rome May 1. There will also be a big parade.
I'm not sure that you'd be able to turn your car in at all locations. Italians take their Labor Day seriously. If I recall, the trains may not even be running. If they were,I'd take a train. If not,I'd probably leave my car at the airport. |

miaspapa - May 1 is on a Tuesday so I was wondering why you suggest driving on Sunday. Do you think traffic be bad Monday and Tuesday?
|
Weekday traffic in Rome can be very hectic (understatement). Like many USA cities,Sunday traffic is generally the best.
In the US we think of two "rush hours", Rome seems to have more of them because of the traditional closing times of 12 until 2. Rome is very "closed down" (business wise)on Sundays. |
I think the traffic will be very bad as there is a "ponte" ie. an official long weekend with monday off and many will be driving back to Rome on the 1st. Plus the big concert in Rome. I would suggest monday or wednesday.
