Driving from Siena to Positano then Positano to Rome

Hello,

My husband & I will be driving from Siena region to Positano in August-- yes, August busiests tourist time! According to Google Maps the fastest route is using A1. Is this a highway all the way or will it eventually become or be part of the drive along the Amalfi coast? Hope I've made my question clear.

Also, we will drive from Positano to Rome the day of our return home. We've been advised it will take 3-4 hours, and we have a plane to catch at 2pm-- thus would like to be at the airport by 11 a.m. We figure leaving 6 a.m. froomPositano. Does anyone think that with the slow traffic this will not be possible? We do not want to waste a night at a hotel near Rome airport.

Thanks

I would drive as far as Sorrento and drop the car,and use private drivers and the SITA busses along the coast---and the Metro del Mare ferries. A car is a real hassle on the actual AC. In August, I would spend my last nite in Rome. The option is a driver to Naples train station and a taxi from Termini to FCO.

Yes, it is a highway. Eventually you will be on a 2-lane road along the Bay of Naples.

I took a bus from Sorrento to Rome on a Monday at 6am... we didn't arrive in Rome until after 1pm because of the traffic. I can understand not wanting to spend your last night at the airport, but I'd at least get much closer to it. How about spending your last night in Rome, not at the airport?

Personally I would never take the chance of driving to the airport on the same day as my flight home. You never know what traffic or other unforseen circumstances may happen upon your way. If you don't like the idea of spending a night at the Rome airport, drop the car in Rome and then spend a night in the city before getting a limo/taxi/car service to the airport for the flight the next day.

Hi C,

>....we will drive from Positano to Rome the day of our return home.<

I wouldn't. I urge you to stay in Rome. You could also consider the Holiday Inn EUR Parc Medici, which has shuttle service to the airport - about 10 min.
