Driving from Salzburg to Vienna
I'm planning to rent a car in Munich, drive to Salzburg and stay for 2-3 days, then drive to Vienna. How long will the Salzburg-Vienna drive take (in July), and any good sites/stops you can recommend that our two boys, ages 10 and 13, will be interested in?

Also, if you can recommend any clean and reasonable (up to 200DEM) Bed and Breakfast accommodations in Salzburg and Vienna, I would appreciate hearing from you too.

See www.euroshell.com for driving distances and time estimates.

And between the two, maybe Melk?

That drive should take 2 days in my opinion. Day one you hit St. Gilgen and Hallstatt and stay in Bad Ischl or perhaps Gmunden. Then, the next day you see the fabulous Abbey at Melk, cross the river thru the Wachau wine region and have lunch in Durnstein. Now you will have seen Austria and can go on to Vienna and enjoy it. Do not be surprised if these 2 days were not more enjoyable than the 2 before or after.

We did the drive in a day but would have liked to have had an extra day. Without stopping it's probably about a 3 hour drive, but there is much to explore along the way. The little towns along the Danube are very picturesque and fun to explore. Definitely stop in Melk. We also toured the concentration camp at Mauthausen - would highly recommend it. I thought it was much more powerful and moving than Dachau. It would be a great history lesson for you sons.

Places to stay can be found much less expensively around Salzburg than around Vienna. My wife and I have reservations at one place this June in Salzburg for only USD$40, but USD$100 in central Vienna. Business contact in Vienna says that is a pretty reasonable price to pay in Vienna!)
