Driving from Rome to Florence, staying 1 night, where?

We are driving from the airport in Rome to Florence and want to spend an overnight along the way. Would like to avoid super touristy locales such as Siena and San G. Any suggestions for towns & places to stay?

I haven't been, but I have researched Bracciano and the towns along Lake Bracciano for a past trip and was very interested. Unfortunately we didn't make it there, but we are leaving in a week and a half for Italy and plan on visiting this time. The town is less than an hour from Rome FCO airport and looks very interesting. Here is a website I used for research: http://www.lakebracciano.com/lakebra.../paesi_en.html. It definitely doesn't appear to be too touristy, as I rarely see anything about it pop up on this board.

I'm sure others will give plenty of good recommendations as well, but I thought I would pass that one along.

Good luck!

How about Massa Marittima?

Thanks, tcreath! I don't know if Lake Bracciano is what spk is looking for, but you may have just solved where I stay next time I fly in through FCO.

Looks like a very nice place to shake off the jet lag.

nessundorma, I'm glad you are considering it! My husband came across that website when we were planning for a Rome trip a year and a half ago, and we were aching to go but as usual Rome captivated us enough that we couldn't bare the thought of leaving so we decided to save it for a future trip. We really hope to stop there on the way to Umbria in a few weeks, and if we do I will definitely report on it. It looks like a great place to break up a drive.

Thank you so much. You guys are really great, I will look into this. Tcreath, let us know about your trip to Italy when you return! I am going in June and am already SO excited!

Ok, we plan to stop in Lake Bracciano but will probably stay overnight in either Massa Marittima or Roccastrada. Any suggestions as to which town or hotel would be best?

How about right in between? I've never stayed here, but this looks good:

If you don't like that, browsing around that website might give you other ideas.
