Driving from Rome

We are thinking of renting a car as we leave Rome to drive to Montepulciano for several days. How difficult will it be to be driving out of the city?

Hi C,

Have you considered taking a train to Orvieto and picking up the car there?

PS,

You might also want to consider picking up the car at the airport.

It will not be difficult at all renting a car in Rome and driving to Montepulciano. Just follow the signs for the A1 North. The rental car company will also provide you with maps & directions. You shouldn't have any problems at all.

If you rent from the airport, you will have to pay the surcharge. I'm assuming from your post that you will already be in Rome, touring, and will be departing Rome for Montepulciano. Correct? If so, the above applies.

Ira, why pay the extra for train tickets to Orvieto to pick up the car? I'm assuming there are more than one in cindy's party. ((b))

There are so many locations to get a car in Rome. If you pick up at Termini it may be more stressful but certainly doable. If you are thinking of taking back roads rather than the autostrada (which I have done and would recommend) get yourself a good map and a compass and head north. BTW Michelin puts out a wonderful map book of Italia. I have found it invaluable.

It's 7E pp and one hour going in the right direction. Avoids driving in and around Rome, which many people have found difficult.

Just a suggestion.
