driving from Reykjavik to Vik or Jokulsarlon
Hi everyone -
I will be in Iceland for 11 days this August. I will be staying the whole time in Reykjavik and taking day trips with different tour companies, but am planning on renting a car for two days. Is it possible to drive from Reykjavik to Vik or Jokulsarlon and back to Reykjavik in the same day. I know this would be a lot of driving but I already have hotel reservations for the whole trip and do not want to change them. Thanks so much! Lexi |
From Reykjavik to Vik is probably around 2 hours in a car, 3 hours to Jokulsarlon. So yes you can do it in a single day.
Check out Reynisstadarfjara on the way, it is worth it. Dangerous, but worth it. |
Thanks Karlth!
So now you have me curious...what is Reynisstadarfjara? I couldn't find anything on the web. |

Thanks karlth! We will have to go there. Those images are amazing!!!! Can you tell me how to get there from the main road?

It is just off the main road before the town of Vik i Myrdal when you are driving east.
Should be marked on every map. |
Lexi,
You have a lot of time to see Iceland. What is the reason that you restrict yourself to staying the whole time in Reykjavik. You will enjoy yourself much more if you do change your plans and drive the ring road. You can do it in 7 days comfotably and stay the rest of the time in Reykjavik. |
Hi Eri - The first part of my trip will be for the Reykjavik marathon (my first ever...yikes), so for that part we have to stay in the city. Next, we have 2 day trips (flying to the Westman Islands and Greenland) already planned and both leave out of Reykjavik, so again we need to be in the city. Maybe next time we can attempt the whole ring road.
