Driving from Pienza to Rome/FCO

Hi everyone,

What is your opinion/experience driving from Pienza to Rome/FCO on a Tuesday (weekday) morning.

I know its approximately a 3 hr drive. I have a rental car that I would need to drop off and then take a 1:30pm flight home.

Is this possible or would this be a tough idea?

I'd really like to sleep overnight in tuscany for the last night on my vacation.

If I left at 7am would that be enough ttime?

Thanks in advance,
Natalie

We did something similar last year, but spent the night before the flight in Orvieto at the Locanda Rosati. We thoroughly enjoyed staying in Pienza, too. You can read my trip report at:

This is not the being of the report, but the start of our stay in Pienza. I also have information about returning the car to Rome airport.

Thanks luvtotravel, I've read your feedback about driving to Rome after looking at directions along with your remarks, i feel confident that we could take the drive since it does not require driving through Rome city center.

Thanks!
Natalie

ps...your photos are incredible, i'm looking forward to sharing them with my husband tonight.

Natalie, You can drive that morning from Pienza and I would try to avoid the rush hour on the GRA. I think a 0700 departure would put you onto the GRA at 0930 and to the airport at 1030.
Stay left for rental car returns.

Thank you Bob! I read luvtotravel's feedback which was very helpful as well =)

I honestly don't think you will have a problem. The airport is extremely easy to navigate and you will be avoiding the city center, which is a good thing. I think that leaving at 7:00 would give you more than enough time to comfortably make your flight.

Best wishes,
Tracy

Thank you Tracy! I feel more confident with the continued support to drive to Rome fco.

I live in Pienza and I have driven to FCO a hundred times both dropping off a rental car and (now that I own a car) leaving my car in the long term parking. I always give myself 3 hours because as Bob the Navigator rightly says the GRA can be unpredictable. But if you left at 7am you would more than enough time to stop for a coffee, get caught in traffic and make it in time. Worry not.

Do you a recommendation of a place to stay for a night or two in Pienza?

megrock--If you want to stay in the village of Pienza, there are a number of sweet little guest houses that are very affordable. I personally like Il Giardino Segreto and Antica Locanda. My hotel is in the countryside 15 mins outside of town: www.la-bandita.com
