Driving From Paris to Milano

Hello, our family is planning a road trip from France to Italy. Are the roads pretty good? Are there lots of places to stay? How far would you drive in a day on average?
Will it be doable with a 6yr old?

Thanks, jee-jee

Excellent roads on which you pay tolls. I took the Mont Blanc Tunnel route. Plenty of places to stay but it can be easily done in a day. What does a 6 yo have to do with it?

Do you mean by road trip that you got an amount of x days available to get from Paris to Milano?

Since when you are not in a rush, you have tons of options - especially if you also use the national highways instead of only zooming by on the motorways.

And yes, there are lots of places to stay. Especially in France, you find many motels/hotels along the motorways, e.g. chains like Etap or Formule 1. While they might not suit everybody's 5* standards and needs, they are a good option to save some nerves as you don't have to navigate the city centers in search for your hotel.

If you are worried about driving with a 6 year old, how did you handle the little critter on the flight to Europe -- heavily sedated?

jeejee,

Driving from Paris to Milan is as doable with a six-year-old as driving a long distance is in the US. The roads are fine. I guess the question is how long do you have for the trip.

One caveat: we drove from Annecy to Milan by way of the Grand St-Bernard pass, and when we got to the Italian border the road became much less good. Perhaps it's been improved by now; at that time it was quite rough.
