Driving from Oberammeragu to Neuschwanstein, driving time for the Southern route..Fri or Sat?

We're staying in Oberammergau and want to visit Neuschwanstein 1st thing. Since we'll be there on a Saturday (in Sept.) do you recommend purchasing tickets online and should I allow about 1 1/2 hr to drive there? We are driving down from Rothenburg the day before (Friday)...would Sat. morning be the best time to visit or should we play it by ear and try to visit on Friday? Recommendations greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Saturday in September should work fine (unless they are driving the cattle down from the high meadows--clogs the roads). It is only 10-15 miles distance, so allow 30 minutes to drive. Have fun.

Cheers,

We were in Oberammergau in Sept. and you will love it. The castle is about a 35-45 min. drive on good roads. We went in the morning and had about a 20 min. wait to ride up in the horse cart. The view down into the valley was so beautiful. You may want to visit the Weiskirche on your way it is such a beautiful church. You will love all the woodcarvings in Ober. and the painted houses....I just kept taking photos because each home was so beautiful. A walk thru town is so much fun.

We drove from Oberammeragu to Neuschwanstein in May 2005 and it was an easy drive.
I don't know if purchasing tickets in advance is a good idea because as I recall the entrance tickets are for specific times and if you are delayed you may be out of luck.
If you arrive early you can purchase your tickets down by the parking lot for a later entry time and
then visit the nearby castle which is just above the parking lot.
I would suggest you take the bus to the
Neuschwanstein castle and then walk back ,or ride the horse cart, down to the parking lot.

We drove from Oberammeragu to Neuschwanstein arriving on Mayday 2005 and it was an easy drive.

When you arrive early you can purchase your tickets down by the parking lot for a later entry time and
then visit the nearby Hohenschwangau Castle which is located just above the parking lot.
I would suggest you take the shuttle bus up to the Neuschwanstein Castle. This bus drives up a separate road and is much quicker than walking up the horse cart road.
You can then walk back down along the horse cart road which is quite scenic, or, ride the horse cart back down.
We purchased a cuckoo clock in oberammeragu and had it shipped home.
It arrived in perfect condition and we hung it without problem.
Enjoy your trip.

Jinx made mention of the town festivals in the area when the farmers bring the cows down from the high meadows called the Viehscheid. Here is link that will give you the schedule of events -

We plan on attending the one in Wertach on Sep 19

Prost!
