Driving from Munich to Garmisch
 

I'll be driving from Munich airport to Garmisch Partenkirchen next month on a Sunday morning -- my first time in this part of the country.

Google suggests that I take the A92 -> A9 to Schenkendorfstrasse, then follow the B2R to the A95/B2 to Garmisch. Does that make the most sense on a Sunday?

YES, quickest way without traffic. But do watch the speed in some places.

Last trip we rented a car we waited and rented in Garmisch, we were spending three nights in Munich before flying out and didn't need a car there. We only rented in Garmisch because I had a broken and we were staying on base and long trek everywhere for me. Last year we did it all by public transportation.

I am just curious about how anyone today can accurately predict traffic flow on any day in the future.

If there IS a way then we could make a fortune.

Really! I just add on extra minutes. I love how my latest gps will correct if I up or lower my speed though. It also knows when the speed drops which I watch on the screen more than anything since I got that speed camera fine in D.C.

Hi Don- Traffic in Munich during the week on B2R can get hectic. It's probably OK on Sunday. However, I always take a different route which works better for my old eyes.

Take the main exit out of the airport to A92 toward Munchen.

Take A92 PAST A9 to A99. Take A99 west toward Augsburg/Stuttgart. Stay on A99 past A8. (A99 turns to the south after it crosses A8.) Turn east off of A99 onto A96 toward Munchen.

Take A96 until it ends (in a Munchen suburb) and turn right on B2 towards Garmisch. About 1 mile later turn right onto A95 toward Garmisch.

A95 turns back into B2 before reaching Garmisch. Take B2 past Oberau and Farchant into Garmisch. (B2 goes through a tunnel around Farchant). In Garmisch, turn right at the stoplight onto BahnhofStrasse which goes straight to the Bahnhof.

Alternatively, you can take the exit from B2 onto B23 toward Garmisch shortly after you leave the Farchant tunnel. This will take you right to the center of Garmisch proper, Zugspitzstrasse.

Usually, on a Sunday morning there is least traffic, so you can take the route that is suggested by your route planner.

Generally, Google Maps works excellently in Germany. If you use it online, you get real time traffic information and the optimal route.

I have a Garmin GPS with lifetime maps updates, but I don't use it anymore. The cellphone with Google Maps works much better. With offline maps, "Here" is the best system (a navigation system developed by Mercedes Benz).
