Driving from Mennagio to Cinque Terre – best way?
We will be driving from Mennagio to Riomaggiore in the second week of September (Wednesday morning).
We will stay in Riomaggiore for a couple of days, and then drive back to Lugano.
It looks like the quickest way to go is thru Parma, but I really would like to drive thru Riviera towns, stop for lunch and walk around.
I was thinking of stopping at Camogli, but Zeppole (on this forum) suggested that Wednesday is a market day, so it would be impossible to park. So, now I am thinking to drive to Santa Margherita Ligure, park, have a lunch, and take a boat to Portofino. Walk around in Portofino, come back, and continue to Riomaggiorie.

Is this a good idea? Do you have any other suggestions on driving and stopping points?

Zeppole also suggested Chiavari for lunch. This sounds good, but then I don’t know how to incorporate seeing Portofino.

I would take the route to Genoa and then stop at SML---consider Portofino as a bonus if the road is not too crowded.

Bob, I was thinking of taking a boat to Portofino, so I don't have to drive there.

The boat schedule would have to coincide--it is only 3 miles.

Lonely Planet book states that road to Portofino is 'death-defyingly narrow' and 'scary'. That's why I was thinking that boat might be better to arrive there.
Is road the same toward SML?
