Driving from Lucerne to Bregenz, Austria
Hi
I am from the UK and planning a driving holiday to mainland Europe. I will be traveling end of this June and beginning of July. While checking the route from Lucerne to Bregenz, it gives me 3 options. First: Zurich> Winterthur> Wil> St. Gallen 180kms Second: Zug> Pfaffikon> Mels> Vaduz> Oberriet 181kms Third: Zurich> Winterthur> Kreuzlingen> Neukirch I will start in the morning, so I want a route which is scenic. Can anyone suggest which will be the best route. You can also suggest if any other routes available. Regards, Dhruba |
No. 1 and especially No. 3 give you the option to see Lake Constance - which is pretty scenic
No. 2 is the most scenic mountain route, if you want to drive only on motorways. If you look for more scenic mountain driving (and don't care too much if it takes you longer to get to Bregenz), you could go a bit further South from Luzern and take road 17 to Glarus (and continue as on route 2). Or go further South till you hit road 19 and have more real mountain driving via Disentis and to Chur. From where you would go North on A13 towards Bregenz. If you rent your car in Switzerland, keep in mind that you will need another toll sticker (Vignette) to drive on Austrian motorways which you must buy before you get on Austrian territory. Or - if you want just to cut through Austria into Germany - use regular highways. |
My only suggestion, if you opt to go via Zurich, would be to take the westring and nordring bypass motorways, in order to avoid driving into the city and encountering traffic. It makes for a much quicker drive.

The Austrian expressway vignette is only about 8 euros, but for your little driving time in Austria, it would be easy to avoid the expressways in driving to Bregenz.
