Driving from Lake Como to Munich, pretty, or pretty scary?

Thank you to all who posted regarding my late October trip to Northern Italy. We narrowed it down and have decided to spend several nights in Venice, then Verona, then wrap it all up with a night at Lake Como (probably Varenna) before heading back to Munich. We are leaning toward driving, and I understand the drive up from Varenna to Munich would take us through the mountains and be quite beautiful.

My question is, what is the drive like? My boyfriend is quite comfortable driving a) in Europe and b) in the mountains--I am the one who is nervous. Also, approximately how long would this drive be? Mapquest put it at about 5 1/2 hours--does this seem reasonable?

It is a great drive. Have a cappucino in St. Moritz and lunch in Landeck. It may get chilly/snowy at the pass just before St. Moritz but probably not.
